‘Millie B’ is a well designed, sturdily built gaff rigged cutter with a long shallow keel and lifting centreplate. She has twin headsails with roller reefing and a large main that can be reefed from the self-draining cockpit. She is comfortable and safe to sail.
She is powered by a reliable and economical Yanmar 1GM10 inboard engine which also charges batteries for the 12v electrical system.
At 22 feet she is only three feet longer than a Cornish Shrimper, but the designer has managed to pack in many comforts while still maintaining a feeling of spaciousness. She is designed to be trailable (although she does not come with a trailer).
• Four full-size berths with hatch forward
• Flushing sea toilet
• Gas cooker and sink
• Chart table
• Folding dining table
• Cupboard, shelves and lots of under-berth storage
• Radio, echo sounder, Garmin GPS
• Two large leisure batteries
• Plough anchor with chain and warp.
She was bought by the current owners in 2012. She has been kept in very good condition, regularly serviced and winterised by the local boatyard. She had a brand-new mast fitted in 2023 by Cornish Crabbers and a new depth sounder in 2022. She has not otherwise needed any major repairs.
She is easy to sail, and powerful with all sails up. There is something special about this boat under sail – a sense of majesty, perhaps. The twin foresails are each smaller than a genoa and are easy to sheet without a winch. Roller reefing on the foresails and the ability to reef the main from the cockpit makes reducing sail easy. When the wind drops, the engine starts easily and is dependable.
She draws around 2ft 4in with the centerplate up, so can navigate shallow waters or can be anchored close to a beach.
